I am fortunate to know and admire both Amita Bhakta and her work. She enriches every art-seeking venue in the Shoals area of AL and across the nation. Her generosity illuminates her culture, and she conducts workshops for all age groups. After seeing her recent work, I requested her to feature on our pages once more. Gate open! - Victorine

Krishna has forever captivated my imagination. He guides me and catches me when I slip or fall. I’ve always felt the covenant of his blessing upon my family and me. I pray that my deeds (Karma) are good and worthy of his grace.

About the Artist

When art (either visual, performing, or literary) is eliminated from people’s lives, civilized society would struggle to exist. It would stop breathing, flourishing, or renewing itself – it would become stale, stagnant, and eventually decay. An artist breathes freshness, growth, vitality, energy, and life into our social fabric. I am privileged to be part of this tribe. My community, my world, and the events in it motivate me to create the subjects of my work; this itself becomes my narrative.

To me, my paintings are like sonnets that tell stories with just a few colors, lines, and shapes. Along the way, my senses are challenged, excited, and immersed. As my paintings remind me of sonnets, my pottery is similar to haikus. Whether it is functional or nonfunctional, working with this modest medium, I can narrate the most interesting tales, reflective of my cultural background, and events around me. In any medium – I aim to please the eyes, seek challenges for my brain, and satisfaction for my soul. I have been privileged to experience and participate in many wonderful moments in my artistic career –Amita Bharak

I took a Sculpture class at a local university when my kids were in middle school, and it was my first time creating with clay. It’s now an ever-consuming addiction that I cannot get rid of. Time and time again, I return to the urge of taking wet/pliable clay in my hands and letting my imagination roll. Whatever self-discipline I have in creating functional ware, I lose it in sculpting. I rely purely on the intuition flowing from my hands and imagination.

Whether in times of stress, deep sorrow, or joy, I can decompress by letting my creativity harness my emotions. At times, my work has brought tears to many eyes generated from my own – see “Circle of Love” (a reaction to Sandy Hook Elementary Shooting in Newtown, CT), and “At the Marathon Humanity Cried” (after bombing at the Boston Marathon). My reflection on my consciousness left gallery viewers pondering “The Voice”. And a great deal of the time, my work brings out joy, like when I celebrated sisterhood in “Enchantresses”, “Made from Same Cloth” series, and my Floriography series.

Bowls represent a coming together because two hands form a bowl. I suggest this evokes kindness and empathy. To me, the noun ‘bowl’ holds multiple metaphorical meanings for hunger, desire, anger, satisfaction, fulfillment, oppression, etc.

I hand-build functional pottery and utilize clay for my sculpting material. I love carving and sculpting shapes in clay in sympatico with molding these utilitarian vessels that can be used daily.

This series of clay work is my homage to production potters around the globe. From ancient times to today, sculptors have devoted their lives to making beautiful vessels. Thrilling for me to be part of that creed.
