I recently had the opportunity to break bread and hand it out with some of the most wonderful people on the planet. And yes, they are my Spel/House Sisters and Brothers, Class of 1974. As I did spend most of the time with my Brothers, it was quite rewarding to be in the company of Black Men who have stood out and exhibited intellectual brilliance in their respective fields. These men were unafraid to let their lights shine and always walked with the mantle of Social Justice upon their hearts. What a powerful collection of prominence and success in life.
As we set up to meet with the newly graduating class and other underclassmen to share and listen, you could see the Shine on their lives. The language they used to express their ideas was full of intellectual prowess. The perspectives on the condition of Blacks in America were astounding. They sounded just like us in the early 70s, with our revolutionary ideas packaged in an up-to-date form.
I attended a seminar where these two younger than we were, Morehouse Brothers, brought us up to date on the inner workings of Washington, D.C. They were awesome. Listen, one was a contributor to CNN, and the other was a political strategist. It was sad on all levels that the same issues that confronted us as older guys confronted them today - racism.
Even though that is still alive and well in this country, I felt so good, positive, and hopeful as this conference displayed the brilliant intellectual prowess before us. Our heirs are shining as lights of deliverance, and I know that my grandchildren and beyond will be beneficiaries of the efforts and works of these young men.
We all can shine in life. Put your best foot forward. Show the Smart instead of burying it within. We all have the power to shine. We are charged to let the awesomeness within each of us out, to help and assist others, and to shine together. It is so essential for everyone in the United States to pour in their gifts of brilliance and not allow the “dummy down dummies” one more inch of forward movement. And for the record, “To Shine” means to stand out and be prominent - to exhibit brilliant intellectual powers. So, in closing, all I have to say is, “SHINE BABY SHINE!”
