"Mother's Day is coming. What practices did your mom instill in you?
"

Mary Young Griffin
A lady never tells her age, and a gentleman never asks.
By example and also encouragement, our Mother taught us to give back, and giving back is what all five of her children have been doing all of our adult lives. She also taught us to love and always be there for family, in every way possible, and this too has been a way of life for us. People marvel at how close my siblings, cousins, and other members of the family are. We may not always agree with each other, but we never let our disagreements come between our love for each other. Our Mother taught us to extend ourselves to those in need, even to those outside of the immediate family.
Growing up, we often had family members or friends in need temporarily live with us for various reasons. When her sister passed, our Mother adopted her sister's son and raised him as if he were her own. My sister's best friend lived with us during her last year of high school when her family moved to California. We had a cousin who lived with us for a summer because his parents wanted him to get away from a negative environment. Our Mom always had an open door and an open heart.
My friends often shared confidences with my Mother before they shared them with their own parents, if at all.
Finally, our Mother taught us to be ladies and gentlemen, often reminding her girls, especially that "a lady never tells her age, and a gentleman never asks." Our Mother carried this practice with her to her grave, 'cause we're still not sure how old she was when she died. 🙂

I’m going to focus on the good practices!
Mom taught me to believe in the miraculous, from fairies to angels, to actual healings. She taught me to love and appreciate music, classical, jazz, gospel, singing and harmonizing, and also dancing, all of which I did from a super young age, and continue today.
She taught me to love and appreciate art, and always had original paintings on our walls and large illustrated books full of beautiful works of art by many artists. She taught me to love reading and to be inquisitive, and had numerous classics on our shelves, including volumes of several types of encyclopedias.
She taught me acceptance and love of gay men, never realizing that I was actually bisexual myself. She taught me style, something I put into practice years later. She taught me love 💕

I didn’t have time for her to teach me much. She died when I was 18 months old. She was an artist, poet, gardener, and seamstress.

"Kindness"

My mom taught me that I am enough; that I did not have to buy friendship or love. To that end, I found myself affirming her teachings through my relationship-building practices. I have friends I've been close to for over 60 years, as well as more recent ones, and I appreciate them all.
We appreciate you sharing your mom's enlightenment with us. Don't stop there; our next issue's topic is "Tranquility," inspired by artist Alex Wilhite's painting. When you are stressed or find yourself ranting too much, what calms you down? What constitutes tranquility for you? Are there times when being calm does not serve you? The song "You Won't Break My Soul" comes to mind for me.
