The Making of Woodside: A Model Train World by Roy Wood

Updated: Jul 3, 2023

'A little Bio music for Roy L. Wood, played by B'ham Wiki:

"Roy Wood, son of editorialist and radio news anchor Roy Wood Sr. and the much older half-brother of comedian Roy Wood Jr. He grew up in Chicago and earned his bachelor's in mass communications at Southern Illinois University. He worked for ABC and NBC stations in Detroit, Chicago, New York, and Boston before coming to WVTM-TV as an anchor and reporter in the mid-1980s.

Wood served as director of marketing and public relations for the Birmingham Jefferson County Transit Authority and, while there, established Jefferson County's first Citizens Transit Advisory Board. He is also an avid model railroaded.

In 2010, Wood ran unopposed in the Democratic primary to fill the District 4 seat left open when four-term incumbent and Commission President Bettye Fine Collins decided not to run for re-election." B'ham Wiki

"He is also an avid model railroader." - B'ham Wiki. This is where my testimony begins.

I'm sure I passed Roy Wood in the hallways of Hyde Park High School in Chicago and heard or saw him on television as an announcer on NBC. However, this year, I met Wood and his wife, Glynnis, at his home in Birmingham, AL, and I got to witness "it" - a mesmerizing train world created by this master railroader. Wood allowed me to share Woodside with you. - Victorine

Presenting...Woodside

"Where it all begins"

"Overall view of the Santa Fe / Southern Pacific RR Woodside division. Time frame late 50's / early 60's"

"New engine facilities at Woodside."

"New house under construction."

"Before my divorce, there was an antique shop here named after my wife. But urban renewal tore it down to make way for a new motel. Wonder who owns it?" (Note the swimming pool).

Two angles of the Woodside Junkyard. "A helping hand to change a flat for the lady."

"Summer home with creek running under the house."

An homage to his recording days.

Woods also built some risque' whimsy into Woodside.

"This is a shot of the Nudie Bar "The G Spot" Hmm....there seems to be a protest out front.
