I first encountered the work of Alex Wilhite in 2017 and introduced it to our GS pages. I admired him for his Alabama roots and his advocacy for deaf creatives. Since then, he has become a friend, and I hope he will return to Alabama for a collaborative exhibition. Until then...Gate Open on Alex Wilhite. - Victorine

Artist Statement

I am an artist deeply invested in the process of creation, beginning with the very materials I use. I experiment by sourcing raw elements—earth, rock, dirt, clay, and natural pigments—to make my own paint. By crafting my colors with organic, plant-based oil mediums such as lavender and walnut oils, I intentionally move away from petroleum products to foster a healthier working environment.

My subject matter draws from landscapes, abstract forms, tonalism, and is inspired by the Hudson River School tradition. What captivates me most are scenes that offer breathtaking openness, transforming nature into an experience of open-air artwork and meditation. These moments of illumination and tonal subtlety continually inspire my exploration and expression.

The uniqueness of my work lies in the handmade quality of my materials and the deliberate mixing of my palettes. This approach not only connects me more intimately with my art but also ensures that each piece resonates with authenticity and a deep respect for the environment. Through this fusion of traditional influence and personal methodology, I create paintings that are both a tribute to nature’s beauty and a reflection of mindful craftsmanship.

*Turquoise Currents on Earthen Rhythm*, a 21-by-21-inch oil painting on canvas. This piece explores the interplay between warm, grounded earth tones—browns, rusts, and ochres—and vibrant turquoise and blue forms that move across the surface. The layered brushwork reveals subtle shifts in texture and color density, creating a dynamic tension that invites careful attention. Inspired by Jake Berthot and the spirit of the Southwestern landscape, the painting balances natural rhythm with unexpected motion. Working with these materials allowed me to deepen the tactile quality and explore how color and form can engage the viewer beyond the visual.
