I met Mark Miraflor through the Kantha Bae Group on Facebook. He was so fabulous in his fashion and his story that I had to ask him to make an appearance in Garden Spices. His talent spans several categories: Perspective, Art, and Style. Gate open. - Victorine

Mark's Journey

My name is Mark Miraflor, and I was born in the Philippines, a country known as the Pearl of the Orient Seas, with a vibrant culture and rich history. It is home to some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, and its people are known for their warmth and hospitality. I am very proud of my roots.

When I was seventeen, my family migrated to California. Life did not turn out as I had envisioned, and at nineteen, I decided to join the military. During my early years of service, the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy was still in effect. Navigating my sexuality, style, and personality was challenging. I often felt uncomfortable, as if I were putting on a front for the people around me.

While serving in Tokyo, Japan, the law was repealed in 2011. I vividly remember the joy and sense of liberation—it felt as if the chains were finally being untied. The LGBTQ community within the military gathered to celebrate in Shinjuku, Tokyo’s well-known gay district. People from different branches came together to celebrate, dance, and embrace their authentic selves. It was during this time that I began exploring fashion and started feeling more comfortable expressing who I truly was. However, growing up in a conservative household meant some repression lingered, and being flamboyant was not always accepted.

This year has been transformative. As I prepare to conclude twenty years of military service, I have immersed myself in the arts, connecting with local artists in New Mexico. Poetry began to flow naturally, and I started pairing my poems with art pieces, which resonated with the local community. To date, I have written more than ten poems.

I also discovered Kantha Bae, a brand celebrated for its inclusivity and one-size-fits-all designs. Through a supportive Facebook community, I connected with incredible women who guided me in exploring patterns, textiles, and colors. I began dressing in ways I had always envisioned, fully embracing my creativity and personal expression.

This is only the beginning of my journey. I am excited about the future and look forward to seeing how my style, self-expression, and creativity continue to evolve over the years.

Like a Rose

I was once adorned with thorns,

Scorned at birth—yet I was reborn.

In the garden, whispers linger,

Hold me tender, say a prayer.

My majestic aura fills the space—

Can you feel my sweet embrace?

Your essence, pure, immaculate;

One drop of grace makes thousands percolate.

O Mother of Divinity,

We honor you, uphold your sanctity.

Dear families, friends, and the in between,

I will be retiring soon, with an effective date of 1 March 2026. I decided to have a Retirement Party instead on 21 Nov 2025. If you and I have crossed paths in my twenty years of service, know that I am grateful for that chance. I have moved 7 times across four states and 3 overseas tours. I cherish the beautiful memories and will carry them with me. As I sashay away from my MEDLOG career, I am strutting to the next chapter of my career, knowing that you have made a significant impact on my life.

While the future may seem uncertain or gloomy amid ongoing environmental changes, this can be a catalyst for creativity and innovation to flourish. I am excited and feel very positive that everything will pan out the way it should.

Trust the process, let go of the ego, and let the spirit guide you.

Much Love,

Mark ✨💫💜
