The Opening

Drummers beat out the rhythm of harmony from their bongos

as they enter the rear of the chapel

with skillful artistry and measured synchronicity

fingers palms heels of the hands strike forcibly

upon the hollow of the vessel we call the drum

melodious flowing sounds that invade our very souls

dare us not to acknowledge that cadence has control

of our throbbing hearts and pulsating blood as it flows

throughout the arterial maze of our very being.

The rise and fall of deep and high pitch influences the dynamics

that give movement to the airways

engages our thoughts in dance

as our sanctuary keeps pace with the tempo

the full deep rich voluminous and sonorous sounds

that the African drummers pound out

bring this audience of 1000

into a oneness of harmony

we call the one mind.
