This thoughtfully designed space was created for an 84-year-old resident settling into a California retirement community.

The goal was to balance comfort, familiarity, and ease of living while embracing a sense of renewal in this new chapter of life. Every element was chosen with both function and warmth in mind, ensuring that all the rooms feel like home while supporting independence.

The layout emphasizes openness and flow, making it easy to navigate without encountering clutter or obstacles. Soft, neutral tones form the foundation, complemented by accents of California sunlight through large windows and touches of greenery that bring nature indoors. A mix of cherished personal items—family photos, artwork, and heirlooms—was carefully integrated with new furnishings, creating a bridge between past and present.

Furniture was selected for comfort and accessibility: a dining table suitable for both meals and visits with neighbors. Storage solutions are discreet but practical, keeping essentials within easy reach while maintaining a sense of calm.

Special attention was given to lighting, with layered fixtures that can shift from bright task lighting to gentle evening ambiance. Textiles, such as rugs and throws, add warmth and softness, while also helping to define distinct areas within the home.

The finished space offers not only safety and convenience but also beauty and dignity—a welcoming home that supports both independence and connection.

This client just turned 84, but her home is crisp, bright, and ready for her to shake a cane.
