One look at the vivid images of Nana Osei, and I had to share his work with Garden Spices. His exuberance and whimsy invite us to a contemporary look at art-Africa. Gate open! - Victorine
Artist Statement
I am Nana Osei "Victor Osei Mensah," born 14 June 1997 at Saltpond, along the coastal line of Ghana, West Africa, to a mechanic fante father and mother, a trader of 3w3 origin. My family moved to Accra in search of greener pastures. My inborn creativity concerns closing up voids within my inner self. I've been evolving in every aspect of my practice.Â
My evolution led me to study visual Art at Nungua Senior High] I completed it in 2013, after which I stood on the streets of Accra hustling to make ends meet and, with the determination to invest in my inborn talent. I found myself reading books on art and self-improvement.
I lost my dad, our breadwinner, during my second term in school. It encouraged me to be my better self and stand up for my rightful place in a world of Creatives.Â
In 2018, I saved enough to set up a studio as a full-time Self-Taught Artist in Accra Newtown, where I reside, without the thought of looking back. This path, with its ups and downs, has led me to meet more prominent and well-established artists from whom I've studied from afar.  Â
With my recent body of work, I draw inspiration from my typical deep African roots, merging Abstract and Figurative. I appeal to my subjects with hats and scalf in vivid colors; I create lines, ancestral patterns, and revealing eyes with emotions. I paint individuals from our everyday lives with strong minds, optimism, and determination.
