Let It Shine

“This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…” Most of us are familiar with the words in this song. We can sing it, and have a rousing time doing that. But how many really take the time to understand what these words really represent, especially in those times when we are called to be a light within the darkness. We are then commanded to be a calm presence of love and illume whatever situation we find ourselves or others in. Our hearts must be able to shine like beacons in the midst of great storms. It is surprising what a difference one light can make.

In Charles Fillmore’s, The Revealing Word, it states that light is the understanding principle in mind. Light is a symbol of wisdom. Light is also the source of all things, it is the beginning of everything. In photography, the way the negative that was taken by the camera is transformed into the positive print that we call the picture, is by shining a light on it. The way that health challenges [sickness], financial difficulties [poverty], bad relationships and the like are overcome is by shining the light on each circumstance and then allowing the circumstance to then show you what it truly is. It is way easier to deal with something when you know what it is verses attempting to deal with the shadow images and distortions that we create.

Genesis 1:3 in The Bible clearly states, “Let there be light.” Let the creative force of the universe that resides within all of us be that which guides us as we traverse this third dimensional experience. And the really cool part is that the light that guides us is the divinity within. That’s right, the divinity that is within each and every one of us. We are the light that guides ourselves. We need to know that we do not have to look outside of ourselves for this light for as the song states, “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine.” It is your light that in all actuality is not that little for it is the light of God. (Hopeful that word God doesn’t bring up any hotspots because as a minister I know it carries a lot of baggage.)

Check this out, the word eye in the Hebrew translates into fountain. Just take a minute with this. When your light shines, it proceeds forth from the fountain of your eyes as if they were these awesome Spiritual Headlights. Everything in your path becomes illuminated by the very light that is God. Once illumed, the Spiritual Understanding then comes and all right action is revealed to you. The important part it to be obedient to the instruction, for after all, you asked for it. See, when you illume others with your light, the Truth of them, perfect , whole and complete, able to walk in their dominion over all things is “brought to light,” not only to you, but for them also. Life in God’s creation is a very reciprocal experience. Wow, we call it the circle of life.

In this, the holiday season, practice letting your light shine. It is so much easier now because people are so much more willing to give therefore to receive than at any time in the year. Whatever your understanding of light is, allow it to take the lead in your activity. Be open to all that manifests and let it add spice to the garden of your soul. “This little light of mine, I’m going to let it shine…..”
