“When you do things from your soul, you feel a river moving in you, a joy” – Rumi
Do you feel there is something missing from your life, that perhaps the world is against you or that other people seem to smile, laugh and be a lot happier and contended in life than you are? Have you ever stopped to wonder why this is so, what you can do about it? Have you even considered what joy actually is?
Joy and contentment in life differs from one person to another. What makes me experience joy does not necessarily bring contentment to another person be it a family member, friend, colleague, or stranger. Very often we experience joy in our lives but we don’t realize it. We are in a rat race and often that hustle and bustle can completely overtake everything else and leave us little time and room to enjoy the small things that make us smile and enjoy life to the fullest. If you pause from your hustle and sit down and think about what actually makes you happy, contended, and feeling joy, you might actually find you have those things already around you and inside you but you just don’t realize it.
Life has an ebb and flow. There are times when we can get into a slump and we will not be able to experience joy and contentment. If this is the case, then you have to figure out what awareness is needed to bring joy into your life. In most cases it is the smallest of things that bring joy and you have the power to gain them by working towards them.
Your joy, happiness and contentment depends entirely on you, no one else can give it to you; it is something inside you that you have to find and work towards. The greatest tragedy of life is that we think our help is external, yet it is deep within us. You can either decide to stay in a rut or take some positive action and make necessary changes in your life in order to experience joy always.
In order to understand what joy means to you, the first step you should take is to look at your emotions, ask yourself questions such as, “If I could be enjoying something in my life, what would it be?” and “What makes me feel contended in my life right now?” Once you understand what your vision of joy, happiness and contentment is, you can build upon what you have now or focus on changing your life to what you would like it to be.
The important thing to remember is to examine your feelings by way of the answers you give to your questions. Examine them honestly and concentrate on the good or bad feelings that you get from your questions and answers.
The magic to bring joy, happiness and contentment in your life is to be aware that it is already there inside you, you just have to bring it out and develop it to start enjoying life. Joy can be found in family life, work, relationships, and nature to name just a few things. In fact, it can be found in anything and any situation if you just know where to look and look in the right direction, the inner you.
